Bereavement

The right help, in the right place, at the right time: The 'Compass' program, exploring the experience and needs of parents whose child has died from cancer.

This study (at the Kids Cancer Centre at Sydney Children's Hospital) hopes to evaluate areas of unmet need and parental satisfaction with the bereavement follow-up services offered nation-wide. Bereaved parents describe a ripple effect of grief over a lifetime extending throughout a broad community of extended family, friends, school systems, and neighbourhoods. Bereaved parents are generally described as having increased risks of long term psycho-social morbidities including deleterious impacts on mental health, marriage quality, social function and economic and employment disadvantage. This research project has the potential to improve services offered to bereaved families, ensuring that they receive optimal assistance, enabling them to rebuild their lives whilst minimising the negative consequences of bereavement
