Sydney Children's Hospital, Medical Day Only Ward refurbishment

The goal of the Centre for Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders (CCC&BD) is to improve the survival rate of children affected by cancer to 100 and reduce the trauma experienced by children and their families undergoing treatment. With the generous support of the Kids with Cancer Foundation we can continue to improve the outcomes for children with cancer.

Since 1998, Kids with Cancer Foundation has supported The Centre for Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders, which has been instrumental in ensuring this internationally recognised centre of excellence receives the necessary funding it requires to provide the highest level of care for children with cancer, and their families, both now and in the future, as well as supporting research into new treatments and ultimately a 100% cure rate.

Vital staff positions have been generously funded by KWCF over many years including; Clinical Nurses Consultants, Oncology Fellows, Oncology Social Workers, Data Managers, Research Positions, a Pharmacist and a coordinator of the Survivorship program. This critical support has enabled CCC&BD to employ the staff it requires to offer the best possible multi-disciplinary care to help children with cancer both now and in the future.

Without your generous donation to the refurbishment of the Cancer Medical Day Only Unit, the Sydney Children's Hospital would not have been able to improve the services for children with life threatening cancer and blood disorders, and to vastly enhance the ability of the day ward to treat patients efficiently and effectively. We have been able to successfully open a purpose built oncology day ward and clinic, allowing us the great benefit of centralising our cancer services which were spread throughout the Hospital. The entire team at CCC&BD, including staff, patients and families are delighted that the ward has been refurbished as a purpose built day only treatment centre. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, we love our new ward!

Children have short and long chemotherapy regimes (up to 8 hours) in the day-only unit. Blood product transfusions are also administered in the day-only unit. Apheresis, including stem cell and dedicated blood product donation, is provided in the day-only unit.

The Long-term follow-up clinic is a multi-disciplinary clinic and provides follow-up for children and adults who have received therapy for childhood cancer. A Clinical Nurse Consultant supports this clinic and ensures appropriate follow-up is undertaken.

Clinics run 5 days per week, Monday to Friday, by appointment. A volunteer is available most days to organise in-door activities for waiting children and their siblings. The clinic is also an opportunity for the family newsletter coordinator to catch up with patients on and off active treatment.

We urge you to consider the children in a hospital near you.  Please donate, post cheques to: Kids with Cancer Foundation, PO Box 135 Westmead NSW 2145 or for credit cards: free-call any donations to 1800 255522, and we guarantee that 100% of these donations will be passed to families, or use this Donate now button or at the top of the page.
