With our supporters help we have been able to provide app. $400,000 each year to Sydney Children’s Hospital.

Sydney Children’s Hospital and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead together form the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network.

The cancer unit at Sydney Children’s is known as the ‘Kids Cancer Centre’.  Since October 1998 we have been providing funds to children’s hospitals, and families of kids with cancer and by 2003 we had achieved an early goal giving $1.3 million to Sydney Children’s Hospital.  Kids with Cancer Foundation Australia has become the largest donor to Sydney Children’s Hospital, not just the Kids Cancer Centre, the whole hospital.  The vast majority of our funds come from the sale of our $2 lottery tickets.

With $8.3 million donated to Sydney Children’s, we have always given our funds to where the specialist Oncologists think it will do the most good for the kids.

1998   $150,109, our first year fundraising for the kids

• $124,161 Grade 1 Clinical Oncology Pharmacist (paid total for 3 years funding).
• $21,000 On costs to the Telemedicine/Telehealth, video conferencing hardware & software.

The Senior Oncologist at Randwick, Ass. Prof. Glen Marshall wrote in 1998: “On behalf of the Department I wanted to extend my sincerest thanks all your staff for your efforts in raising money for kids being treated for cancer at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick. With the $150,109.00 you have raised in the recent Art Union we will now be able to employ an Oncology Pharmacist and purchase a Telemedicine Computer Link.Both will be of immeasurable benefit for those unfortunate kid’s and their families treated in our Department. I look forward to working with you and your staff in the future to make the lives of kid’s with cancer a little brighter”

We commenced fundraising in 1998 and started supporting vital research in our second year to find better ways to treat the youngest of cancer patients.

Kids with Cancer Foundation’s continual funding since 1999 of Sydney Children’s research positions assisted Associate Professor Richard Cohn when in 2001 he founded the Behavioural Sciences Unit, recognising that until a cure for all childhood cancers has been found, it is our mandate to improve hospital initiatives to better support patients and their families from diagnosis to survivorship and bereavement. He has championed the importance of research studies which cover all psycho-social and behavioural aspects of paediatric cancer and worked to translate these research findings into clinical practice within the hospital.

Many of our children come to the Hospital with very rare forms of cancer, and of these there are a few for whom outcomes may not always be positive. With many of the drugs that can provide the care and treatment for these rare forms of cancer not covered by the PBS, CCC&BD has required over $100,000 worth of extra drug costs alone this year. These drugs are essential to the care for our children, many of whom would not survive without them, and when combined with treatments such as a Bone Marrow Transplant, these drugs provide the best outcomes for our most vulnerable
children. With your continued support, CCC&BD will continue to meet its goals of providing the best possible care for our brave young oncology patients and their family both now, and for the future.

The money that we donated on the day will go to the Kids Cancer Centre’s new expanded Cancer Research Unit and forms part of the $1.5million that we have pledged.  Through these  donations in conjunction with Sydney Children’s Hospital we are working to find a cure for childhood cancer and with continued support from our own supporters we hope to find that cure sooner than later.
