The Bodman Cancer Centre for Children: A lasting legacy for kids with cancer
For almost three decades, Kids with Cancer Foundation has stood alongside kids with cancer, their families and the hospitals and clinicians caring for them.
Almost 30 years later, we returned to Westmead for a very special moment in that journey – the unveiling of the Bodman Cancer Centre for Children.
Named in honour of our founder, Peter Bodman, the Centre represents far more than a name on a building. It recognises a vision that began almost 30 years ago: to make life easier for kids with cancer and their families, and to ensure hospitals have the people, resources and facilities they need to provide the very best possible care.
Today, the Bodman Cancer Centre for Children is the largest comprehensive paediatric oncology and haematology treatment centre in New South Wales, bringing together specialist services for children with cancer and blood disorders through diagnosis, treatment and ongoing care.
For families, it means purpose-built spaces designed with their experience in mind. For clinicians, it provides an environment that supports specialist care, research, education and collaboration.
Nearly three decades of supporting children’s cancer care
Our partnership with Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation and the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network stretches back almost three decades.
In fact, some of Kids with Cancer Foundation’s earliest hospital funding was directed to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, beginning in 1998 with funding for an Oncology Fellow.
Since then, our commitment has continued to grow.
Kids with Cancer Foundation has contributed and committed more than $30 million towards children’s cancer care across Sydney Children’s Hospitals, helping fund vital clinical positions, research, treatment, services and support for children and families.
Our latest $10.5 million commitment is supporting the Bodman Cancer Centre for Children at Westmead, as well as dedicated oncology family spaces at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick.
It is a commitment we are incredibly proud of, because behind every dollar are kids and families navigating one of the hardest times imaginable – a childhood cancer diagnosis.
To see the Kids with Cancer Foundation Bodman Cancer Centre for Children unveiled at Westmead, where our support for paediatric oncology care began all those years ago, was an incredibly meaningful full-circle moment for our Foundation.
A very special recognition of our founder
Seeing the Bodman name unveiled at the Centre was an incredibly proud and emotional moment for our Foundation.
Peter founded Kids with Cancer Foundation with a determination to make a genuine difference for children diagnosed with cancer and the families beside them.
What began with that vision has grown into decades of support across Australia – from funding clinical positions, hospitals, research and clinical trials, to providing direct financial assistance, Care Packs and wigs to families and children when they need them most.
The naming of the Bodman Cancer Centre for Children is a lasting recognition of Peter’s vision and the impact he has helped create.
But Peter would be the first to say that this recognition belongs to so many people.
It belongs to the donors who have trusted us with their generosity. The volunteers who give their time. Our partners and supporters. Our team. The clinicians, researchers and hospital staff who dedicate their lives to caring for children. And, above all, the extraordinary kids and families who remain at the heart of everything we do.
Looking to the future
While this milestone gives us an opportunity to reflect on how far we have come, our focus remains firmly on what comes next.
There is still so much more to do for kids diagnosed with cancer and their families.
We are incredibly grateful for our long-standing partnership with Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation and the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network, and proud of what we have been able to achieve together.
The Bodman Cancer Centre for Children represents what is possible when people and organisations share a commitment to creating better care and support for children and families.
And as we look towards the future, Kids with Cancer Foundation will continue doing what we have done for almost three decades: standing beside kids with cancer and their families, and helping make today easier when they need it most.
