Blue Mountains Police Officer Demonstrates Heart of Community Policing, Supporting Kids with Cancer
Garry Sims: Leading with Compassion and Connection
For Detective Chief Inspector Garry Sims, policing has always been about more than enforcing the law; it’s about building bridges and fostering genuine community connection. In 2024, Garry rallied the Blue Mountains community to donate items for 300 Christmas Care Packs 4 Kids for Kids with Cancer Foundation, which were delivered to children undergoing cancer treatment at hospitals across Australia. This year, he set his sights even higher, aiming to double that impact by inviting the community to come together once again to bring joy to children and families during the festive season.
Yesterday, that incredible effort became visible as Garry and his team personally delivered the generous donations from the Blue Mountains to our head office. A powerful reminder of what can be achieved when communities unite for a cause.
“Communities need connections, and police can play a role in fostering that,” said Detective Chief Inspector Sims. “Bringing people together for a common cause and celebrating what we can achieve together, that’s what matters.”
Why Garry Chose Kids with Cancer Foundation
“When I was looking for a charity that supported children, Kids with Cancer Foundation stood out,” Garry shared. “Their comprehensive approach—funding hospitals, supporting families, research, Wigs4Kids, and Care Packs—showed me an organisation truly committed to making a difference and making today easier for kids with cancer and their families.”
Since first partnering with Kids with Cancer Foundation in 2021, Garry has raised thousands of dollars, organised community drives, and inspired countless others to get involved. His efforts reflect a modern policing philosophy, one that sees officers as the heart of their communities, standing alongside families during life’s toughest challenges.
Ambassadors Amplifying Awareness
CEO Todd Prees said:
“Community Ambassadors like Garry Sims, alongside inspiring figures such as Jacob Kiraz and Jimmy Vernon, help us unite diverse communities around a common purpose—ensuring no family faces childhood cancer alone. Each ambassador brings their unique platform and passion, transforming awareness into action.”
From grassroots initiatives to professional sports and motorsport, our ambassadors are amplifying our voice, inspiring others to get involved, and creating tangible support for families during the most challenging journey of their lives.
The Heart of Community Policing
With over 40 years of service in the NSW Police Force, Garry Sims exemplifies what it means to lead with empathy. His commitment to mental health causes like R U OK? and Fortem Australia, alongside his work with Kids with Cancer Foundation, demonstrates that police officers can be powerful advocates for change.
“Letting people know they are not alone, letting them know people care—that’s what humanity is about,” Garry said. “Kindness and respect. The world needs more of it.”
We are excited to have you on board, Garry!
