Wigs4Kids™

Helping your child feel more like themselves
Hair loss during cancer treatment can be one of the hardest parts for children. It often starts just a week after treatment begins and can be a visible reminder of everything they’re going through. For many kids, losing their hair can feel like losing a part of who they are.
That’s why we created Wigs4Kids™ — to help children feel more comfortable, confident, and like themselves again.
Through this program, your child can receive a bespoke wig.
Frequently asked questions
Wigs4Kids™ is a program that provides children who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment with a bespoke wig, completely free of charge. It’s about helping kids feel more confident and comfortable during a really tough time.
Children aged 6–18 who are undergoing treatment for cancer and have experienced hair loss are eligible for a wig through the Wigs4Kids program, pending eligibility. As the program is part of our Family Financial Assistance Program, it is important to note that families still need to be eligible as part of the criteria for that program. See Family Financial Assistance FAQ’s.
Kids with Cancer Foundation receives hair donations to be made into bespoke wigs by our wigmaker for children who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment. Please speak to your Hospital Social Worker or Welfare Worker if you would like to apply for this program.
Yes, for kids aged 6-18 years with a cancer diagnosis, our Wigs4Kids™ program provides both the hair to create bespoke wigs, as well as funding the cost of having them made.
We provide bespoke, human-hair wigs made from hair donated through our Wigs4Kids™ campaign.
Whilst they are made to fit each individual child, it’s important to note that the wig won’t be an exact match to your child’s natural hair—but we do our best to find something similar in colour, length, and style.
Not exactly. While we do our best to match the colour and style preferences, it’s important to remember that wigs won’t look or feel exactly like their own hair. Some families expect an identical match, but wigs are a close approximation—designed to help restore confidence.
The wigs are made by a professional wigmaker, Ella Wigmakers based on the Central Coast in NSW, who specialises in creating custom wigs using real, donated hair. We work closely with Ella Wigmakers who understand the unique needs of kids going through cancer treatment – like sensitive scalps, smaller head sizes, and comfort.
Because we cover the full cost of the wig through our program, families need to go through our approved process. This helps ensure quality, safety, and consistency across every wig we provide. Unfortunately, we can’t reimburse families who choose to use their own wigmaker or purchase a wig elsewhere.
Once we’ve received the completed application and all necessary information, it usually takes 4-6 weeks to have the wig made and delivered. Custom wigs take time, and we appreciate your patience while our partnered Wig Maker creates something special for your child.
You’ll need to fill out a short application form and provide a recent photo of your child, along with information about their preferred hair colour and style. We’ll guide you through every step to make it easy.
Yes! Wigs can be styled, tied up, braided, and accessorised – just like real hair. However, we recommend gentle care to extend the life of the wig. Ella Wigmakers will provide instructions on how to care for your wig.
Our wigs are made with soft, breathable materials, so they’re as comfortable as possible. Some kids take a little while to get used to wearing a wig—this is completely normal.
Yes, absolutely! Our Wigs4Kids program is here for all children who need a wig, including boys. If you're requesting a wig with shorter hair, please note that there may be some limitations.
In order to create a bespoke wig, the hair used needs to be a certain length—so the final style may be a little longer than what you might be expecting. Once you receive the wig, you're very welcome to have it professionally cut and styled to suit your child's preferences.
Many families choose to do this, and it can be a great way to personalise the look and help your child feel more comfortable and confident.
No. The process is done through photos and measurements that Ella Wigmakers will guide you through.
It happens, and that’s okay. Some kids love wearing a wig, others prefer hats or going without. The wig is there if and when they want it—but we always encourage families to follow their child’s lead and comfort level.
Ella Wigmakers will provide care instructions with every wig. You’ll need a wig stand, gentle shampoo, and some patience—it’s a bit different from caring for natural hair, but we’re always here to offer tips and support.
The wigs are made using real hair donated by generous individuals across Australia. Many of these donors grow and cut their hair specifically for this purpose, often as part of fundraising or awareness efforts. Every strand is a gift from someone who wants to help a child feel like themselves again. Want to donate your hair? Find out more here.
The program is fully funded by donations from the public and generous partners. Thanks to community support, we’re able to provide these wigs at no cost to families. Interested in fundraising? Find out more here.
Yes, they can. However, the hair must be cut before it begins to fall out due to treatment. Ideally, this should happen before treatment starts, but it can still be done within the first 14 days of treatment, as long as the hair has not yet started falling.
This is because, under a microscope, hair has small scales that become rough and tangled once it begins to fall out. For the wigmaker to use the hair, it needs to be in good condition and cut while still growing naturally on the head.
